Souvenez vous : « What’s good for General Motors is good for the country ». Detroit était la capitale de l’automobile américaine. Les big three avaient assis leur puissance dans cette ville du Michigan et leur influence essaimait dans le monde.

Eliel Saarinen – architecte finlandais reconnu et père d’Eero – fut commissionné en 1945 pour réfléchir à l’implantation du centre technique de General Motors à Warren, dans la banlieue de Détroit, qui allait prendre la forme d’une utopie moderniste. Au décès de son père en 1950, Eero reprend le projet au sein de son cabinet Eero Saarinen & Associates.

Contrat, le plus important de l’architecte, rien n’était trop beau dans ce projet destiné à attirer les chercheurs les plus talentueux afin de développer les produits de General Motors. L’architecture devait également refléter la qualité des produits de l’entreprise ; objectif atteint, tant le complexe fut utilisé pour présenter les dream cars et nouveaux modèles de la compagnie.

L’ensemble s’articule autour de 5 blocs longilignes qui abritent autant de départements de l’entreprise : recherche, ingénierie, développement des procédés, design, et service. Pour s’y retrouver, chaque tranche de bâtiment est revêtue d’une surface de couleur différente : simple et efficace. En leur sein, d’étonnants escaliers suspendus à des tiges d’aciers relient les différents étages.

Parmi les pièces maitresse, on retiendra le château d’eau et le styling auditorium. Le premier, en acier inoxydable, contraste avec l’horizontalité du complexe, tandis que le second n’est autre qu’un dôme, du même matériau, destiné à servir d’écrin aux nouveaux modèles.

Enfin, rappelons qu’Alexander Calder est à l’origine des fontaines qui surgissent du vaste plan d’eau autour duquel s’articulent les bâtiments. Rien n’était trop beau pour General Motors.

Que ce soit pour la qualité apportée aux moindres détail ou l’ambition qui a prévalu à sa conception, le GM Technical Center méritait que l’on s’y attarde.

Don’t forget: “Whats good for General Motors is good for the country”. Detroit was the capital of the US motor industry. The ‘Big Three’ had all installed themselves in this Michigan town and their influence was felt right across the world.

Eliel Saarinin – esteemed Finnish architect and son of Eero – was commissioned in 1945 to begin initial studies on a new Tech Centre for GM at Warren, in the Detroit suburbs, which would take the form of a modernist Utopia. On the death of his father in 1950, Eliel took control of the project at his father’s company, Eero Saarinen and associates.

In this project, the architect’s biggest contract, nothing was too beautiful to be included. The complex was designed to house the most talented researchers while they developed The General’s latest technologies. The architecture had to reflect the qualities of the company’s products; certainly this objective was met, as the site was often used to unveil concepts, dream cars and significant new car launches.

The complex was based around five long buildings which contained the key R+D facilities of the company: research, engineering, process development, design, and services (metallurgy, metrology, test facilities etc). To help you find your way round, each section of the building was decorated in different coloured surfaces – simple and effective. At the heart of the buildings, stunning staircases suspended from fine steel rods linking the different levels.

Among the many masterpieces of the site, 2 notable features were the water tower and the styling auditorium. The first, in stainless steel, contrasted with the horizontal expanses of the complex, whereas the second was a large, simple dome (also in stainless) intended to reflect the new cars in widescreen format.

Finally, its worth noting that Alexander Calder was responsible for the fountains which sprang from the huge water park around which the buildings were built. Nothing was too grand for GM.

Whether its for the attention given to the slightest detail or the ambition signified by its construction, the GM tech centre deserved a second look.
